I see many discount hearing aid ads, or offers of free ones with a study. Are these legitimate?

Most ads like these are confusing for a reason: they do not want you to completely understand. They are meant to draw you into a sales pitch. Be cautious, and seek out an established, licensed Hearing Specialist. Through the TruHearing program, you have access to thousands of qualified providers across the country.

Will the new technology really improve on my old hearing aid?

Just in the last couple of years, hearing aid technology has vastly improved overall - meeting customer needs to remove background noise and to minimize feedback. A few of the improvements include datalogging, automatic program changes, use of remote control, and digital feedback suppression. These features, or the level at which they now perform, may not have been available to you before. You should contact our service network to learn more about these new features and how they may help you.

I only have a little loss now. What is the risk in waiting for a while longer? Will things get worse?

Hearing aids cannot completely avoid the loss that comes with age and the impact of years of noise. We are all going to lose some hearing. However, being able to makes sense of what we hear depends upon our ability to differentiate sounds, to locate their source, and to process what we hear. These abilities decrease unless the hearing pathways are stimulated by use. So, while you may not speed up the loss by waiting, you could reduce your ability to adapt to a hearing aid when the time comes that you really need one. Your best course of action is to contact a hearing specialist, have a test, and then discuss the options.

Who is the best manufacturer?

Of the more than 20 manufacturers, only a handful do the actual research and design of the state-of the-art digital technology. Among these major brands, there is very little difference. Our Hearing Consultants and local service providers will know the best brand, with a proven record of quality and support.

Which hearing aid is the best one?

There is no "best" hearing aid, because hearing aids have to be custom-fit for each user - there is no "one size fits all".

There are many good manufacturers, with very similar internal technology, and external or cosmetic design. The best hearing aid is the one that best meets your needs, medical and lifestyle. This choice must be made with the assistance of a trained Hearing Consultant or audiologist. The benchmark of a good program is customer care and support, providing education about options, good warranties, and assisting you with your selection.

What features should I look for in a hearing aid?

According to our customers and Audiologists and hearing loss consultants, when choosing a hearing aid, you should consider the following features and capabilities:

  • Directional Microphones.
Two microphones separate sound sources into those directly in front of you, from those in the greater environment, enabling greater comprehension.
  • Multiple Compression Channels.
Through digital technology, multiple channels react quickly to increase volume for speech, decrease for interfering ambient sounds and noise, and protect from loud, sudden sounds.
  • Multiple Programs or Memories.
You can change the way in which your hearing aid processes sounds from one environment to another - such as moving from a room with tv, out onto the patio where there are ambient noises and conversations.
  • Noise Reduction.
While nothing can eliminate background noise and wind interference completely, the noise reduction technology - the effectiveness of which varies with different models -- acts to minimize this problem.
  • Feedback Cancellation.
This is where digital technology really improved things - virtually eliminating the old problems of whistling and squealing.

How is Digital Hearing Technology Different?

Today, nearly 100% all hearing aids sold are digital. The reason digital hearing technology is considered the most advanced available today is that it provides the most precise personal fitting. It adapts to meet your ear, and your hearing needs.

Digital Hearing Aids have a finely crafted, custom-programmed chip which offers the most precise way to deal with your particular hearing loss, at the specific amplification required. The digital technology enables the device, and your brain, to independently process separate bands of incoming sound -- a custom-tuned and highly adaptive hearing aid.

Through this technology, you will once again receive and process sound nearly as nature intended.

What is the most popular style?

The open-fit style has become the most popular over the past five years, primarily due to its size and fit: no "stopped up" feeling, greater comfort, nearly invisible look. And, with the development of better technology, even in it smaller size, it can deal with a wider range of hearing loss.
